During analysis of events reported by Pennsylvania healthcare facilities, Authority analysts found evidence of unintended consequences that arose when patients were treated based solely on glucose meter results. 

In early 2011, the reported incidence of lower respiratory tract infections and influenza-like illnesses increased in Pennsylvania nursing homes, in comparison to previous reporting periods.
