These educational video modules discuss how catheterization predisposes residents to urinary tract infections. The catheterized urinary tract is the most common source of bacteremia in nursing home/long-term care resident populations. The modules have been developed for nursing home prevention champions. The modules are adapted from a Webinar recorded October 1, 2009. (Go to modules.)
After viewing these modules, participants should be able to do the following:
- Identify risk factors common to the elderly that increase the risk of
urinary tract infections (UTIs). - Recall specific clinical criteria for the use of indwelling catheters.
- Recognize catheter-related clinical complications.
- Distinguish between care that does and does not represent best practice strategies for catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention.
- Recognize the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) F-Tag requirements associated with preventing CAUTIs.
- Recall organization best practice guidelines for preventing CAUTIs.
